Gdynia America Shipping Lines (London) Limited traces its origins to one of Poland's most storied maritime enterprises. The parent company, Gdynia-Ameryka Linie Żeglugowe S.A., was established in 1930 — originally as the Polish Transatlantic Shipping Company — to mark Poland's presence on the Atlantic, operating passenger and cargo services connecting Gdynia with New York and Halifax. Within a few years it had grown into one of Central Europe's most recognised shipping lines, operating famous vessels including the MS Piłsudski and the MS Batory.
During the Second World War, the company's management relocated to Great Britain, and in 1941 a new entity — Gdynia America Shipping Lines (London) Limited — was incorporated in England. The London company operated vessels sailing under the British flag, as wartime regulations prohibited changing a ship's flag while hostilities continued. This wartime necessity gave birth to what would become a permanent London presence.
After the war, as the Polish shipping industry was nationalised and the parent line absorbed into state-owned structures, the London company continued independently, carrying forward the GAL name and its deep-rooted connections to Polish and international shipping. It has evolved from its origins as a shipowning subsidiary into the specialist shipping agency and brokerage it is today — retaining the heritage of the name while building an independent reputation in breakbulk, project, and heavy lift trades.
